Gene therapy is slowly gathering steam and here we can see the result of years of research. Combining an engineered viral vector with non-mutated target gene delivery, Dale Turner, who has been blind for most of his life, was able to see details and colours again for the first time in years.

The research, conducted on one of the most common causes of childhood blindness - Leber’s congenital amaurosis - looked at the mutated genes that give it its hereditary, recessive nature. The study is published in Nature Genetics. The whole story can be read here.
